A fuel cell does not want a cylinder — it wants a steady supply. Every stack specifies a narrow inlet-pressure window and a peak flow demand, and expects both to hold from take-off to landing. The cylinder disagrees: its pressure falls continuously, 350 bar to near-empty, over the whole flight. The component that resolves that argument is the regulator — and how it is built decides whether your stack ever notices the cylinder emptying.
A single-stage regulator reduces cylinder pressure to delivery pressure in one step — and passes part of the supply’s fall through to its outlet. A two-stage regulator reduces in two steps, so the second stage always works from a near-constant intermediate pressure. The difference is not subtle:

Do all fuel cells need a two-stage regulator? Any system where supply pressure falls significantly in service benefits; for low-pressure PEM stacks fed from 300+ bar cylinders, drift from a single-stage unit can leave the stack’s inlet window entirely — which is why two-stage is the safe default for fuel-cell UAS.
What outlet pressure do fuel cells need? Most PEM stacks specify below 1 barg; others run 3–10 barg. The HDRX-R outlet is set to your stack’s specification at order and held to ±0.1 bar as standard.
Can one regulator serve hydrogen and helium? The architecture does — the HDRX-R’s SS 316 wetted path is inert in helium — but each unit is fitted and verified for its ordered gas service and configuration.
